Rust Never Sleeps

The owner of this Suzuki VanVan parked at my work has really neglected his chain. Something that I’ve seen a lot of on bikes fitted with ‘Learner’ plates. They’re so new to motorcycles that the idea of routine maintenance doesn’t seem to register. Or, it could simply be down to economics. A replacement chain costs money. I don't like the look of the rear sprocket either.

It’s probably too late to just leave a can of chain lube on the seat. If it was up to me I’d be fitting a new chain and sprockets, pronto, before this one snaps and causes some serious damage to the bike and/or rider.

  1. You're absolutely right Mike I too see a lot like that Van Van and it does tend to be youngsters and more noticeable on Chinese and other cheap makes. Dave Mackie ran a Chinese bike purely for commuting on and it was neglected but he was saving his good bike from the rigours of the daily commute.

  2. Shaft drive or belt drive needed here...when I started riding... the first thing I learned to do was check oil level, air in tires, lube and adjust chain. The shops probably just show them how to start the thing and wave goodbye...
